I got home at 12:30 am this morning and have slept on it. It's a pity having to put into words on a game that Wolves never looked like at any stage of getting anything from.
Wolves may have had an early chance through Nathan Byrne that the keeper safely gathered and the Kevin McDonald effort from distance in the second half, but that was as good as it got for Wolves.
The big surprise during the first half was how long it took Brentford to go in front, i counted four decent openings for them before Swift gave them the lead, one that hit the post, one that Ikeme turned away for a corner and two blocked efforts. But for Ikeme, the end result could have four or five.
Wolves as side could not get near Alan Judge or Ryan Woods, the latter enjoying so much freedom in the central midfield area. I have never seen a footballing side allow the opposition so much time on the ball and go unchallenged. It's a contact sport, but challenges are limited to say the least.
Looking back on the first goal, Swift may not have a got a true touch on the ball to score after his initial effort was saved. It's the lack of challenge in the build up that doesn't help.
Going in at the break 1-0 down i expected a response, a decent cross into the penalty area from van La Parra and as already stated the Kevin McDonald's effort from distance was all i can look back on and say we threatened to create an opening.
I can probably single out both Ikeme and McDonald as two who in their respective positions on the pitch that could at least say they gave something. Ikeme keeping the scoreline down and McDonald at least tried to make things happen, but it's difficult for him with what's around him.
I often question why central defenders end up playing as a full back and Kortney Hause had a torrid time at left back, ripped to shreds time and again and not given the support by those directly in front of him, on the other side, Doherty got very little support either.
The second goal didn't take long in coming, again a move that could and should've been stopped, Alan Judge again involved, Canos able to get his effort away, again unchallenged to beat Ikeme at his far post. At 2-0 down, i expected changes, it was no big surprise to see van La Parra replaced, just like his team-mates, he looked totally out of his depth, i was surprised to see Byrne replaced though, he didn't do a lot, but any natural width was soon gone with the introduction of both Le Fondre and Saville.
Out of the three goals conceded, the third goal leaves a bad taste in the mouth, Swift left totally unmarked about six yards out to score. I don't mind Wolves losing and going down fighting, but this is not acceptable at any level. The forward players are living off very little service as once Wolves have the ball, it's easily lost again.
Where do Wolves go from here? who knows, but the way Wolves are playing, down the table and fast. Wolves made Brentford look like Barcelona last night, pleasing on the eye and Wolves couldn't get near them. A deserved victory.
My thoughts on another poor Wolves performance and defeat.
